The wife of the Abia State Governor, Priscilla Otti, has called for sustained public awareness, regular screening and other stronger support systems for patients that will help in curbing breast cancer in Abia State.
Otti, who made the call during an event hosted by the Safe Tent Care Initiative, in collaboration with the Abia State Ministry of Health to commemorate the 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Week with the theme, “Celebrating Strength in Every Unique Story,” assured of her support for those battling the disease.
Represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Adaeze Emetu, Otti described early detection and prevention as the most effective strategies for reversing the devastating trend of breast cancer.
She praised survivors of the disease as “beacons of courage and resilience whose stories inspire hope and determination in others.”
She reflected on the significance of October as a month dedicated to celebrating survivors, supporting fighters, and honouring those who have passed away from breast cancer. She noted that while Breast Cancer Awareness Month may have drawn to a close, the advocacy, love, and compassion must continue throughout the year.
“Breast cancer affects us all, regardless of age, ethnicity, or background. Therefore, get screened, show love, donate, share the word, and advocate for change,” she said.
She urged women to take their health seriously and undergo regular checkups, stressing that breast cancer is not a death sentence when detected early.
She called on communities, corporate bodies, and faith-based organisations to intensify awareness efforts and support research initiatives.
