Abia dismisses list of TC chairmen in circulation as fake, promises to offset pension arrears

From Okey Sampson, Umuahia

The Abia State Government has dismissed as fake, the list in circulation which purportedly contains the names of members of the yet-to-be-constituted Transition Committee of the 17 local government areas of the state.

This is even as the government has reiterated its earlier promise to offset arrears of pension owed to pensioners in the state.

Dismissing the said list as fake while speaking in Umuahia, Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu described the rumoured list as “phantom and speculative”.

Kanu made it clear that the Abia state government under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti was yet to make known any list of the transition committee chairmen, their deputies or councillors and urged the public to disregard such list as it did not emanate from the Governor.

The commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu on his own said no official list has been released as names of transition committee chairmen of the 17 LGAs in the state, stressing that the Governor was still consulting with stakeholders over the matter.

He informed that the government was committed to bringing unparalleled development to the local governments and as such was determined to ensure that all money accruing to the councils for development got to them once the TC chairmen were appointed.

Meanwhile, the Abia government has restated its commitment to offsetting all pension arrears owed to pensioners in the state as soon as the ongoing verification exercise for pensioners was concluded.

Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Kanu who made this known, recalled that Governor Otti had during the electioneering promised to clear all outstanding arrears owed Pensioners by the previous administration.

He gave the assurance that the present administration would clear the arrears before the end of the year.
