A new voice is rising in African art. Blessing Ijeoma Torita (Torita) is a self-taught Nigerian artist whose
bold, surrealist canvases confront history, identity, and the future of Africa. Her work blends symbolism,
vulnerability, and truth-telling, positioning her as one of the most compelling emerging visual artists of hergeneration.

Torita first drew international attention in 2023 at The Trinity Collection, RARE in Cape Town. Later that year, she staged The Breathing Experience in Lagos, a multimedia exhibition that fused art, music, and poetry to capture the frustrations and resilience of Nigerian youth in the era of Japa migration. Both projects revealed her ability to transform personal expression into collective storytelling.

Now, Torita is teasing her next chapter, a powerful body of work tentatively titled The Unscrambled. The collection promises to unpack Africa’s untold history through works such as Who Betrayed Africa?, which reframes betrayal within an African context, and The Africa Conference, which imagines a reversal of the 1884 Berlin Conference. These works, like much of her art, do not accuse but invite reflection, accountability, and healing.

“What if Africa held the pen when history was written?” Torita asks, challenging viewers to reconsider
the narratives that have shaped and distorted African identity.

A Self-Taught Surrealist with a Mission
Born in Ogoja, Cross River State, Torita began painting on the walls of her bedroom before any formal
recognition.

Inspired by Salvador Dalí yet deeply rooted in African traditions, her work explores the intersection of ancestral memory and futuristic vision.
Her mission goes beyond the canvas. She envisions a world where children, often with little access to creative outlets, can find freedom and possibility through art.

“Through truth and connection, we begin to heal, ” Torita says. stir empathy and help us imagine a better world.”

“Art should not only entertain, it should
What’s Next With The Unscrambled on the horizon, Torita is cementing her place among Nigeria’s most exciting new visual artists. Her work is not just about beauty, it is a mirror, a question, and a declaration.
