Akwa Ibom State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has urged Local Education Secretaries and Head of School Services across 31 local government areas to partner and unite to improve quality of education in rural communities.
Speaking in Uyo Akwa Ibom state capital during meeting with Local Education Secretaries and Heads of School Services ahead of school resumption in the state , the SUBEB Hon Anietie Etuk said collaboration was necessary to drive core foundational values of basic education at the grassroot.
Etuk disclosed that the board will procure digital technology that help in monitoring activities and performance of teachers at their duty posts in all the local government areas in the state.
He lamented that teachers in local government areas were show casing unproductive attitudes in public schools such as lateness, absenteeism and refusal to respect transfers to places of primary assignment adding that these have impacted negatively on education in the state .
” This is why we would soon use digital technology to track teachers in rural areas .
” With these technology , government will know those who are not working even in the rural areas. Very soon we would activate the device ”
Etuk further explained that the meeting was convened ahead of reopening of public schools in the state on 20th April, 2026 and warned against battles of superiority by the education helmsmen in local government areas which has been reported to the State Universal Board ( SUBEB) for prompt actions.
” We have received reports of friction between Education Secretaries and Heads of School Services in their respective Local Education Authorities.
” All I want from you is total collaboration . You all know that Education Secretaries are the Heads of Local Education Authorities .
” Therefore, the Heads of School Services must cooperate with them to achieve success in the school system . Where there is infighting, nobody can achieve anything .

Etuk observed that official vehicles sent by government to Local Education Authorities have generated cold war between Education Secretaries and Heads of School Services adding that the vehicles should be retrieved if such fights continues.
” But the Education Secretaries have authority to take charge of the vehicles for official purposes
” You can share until the vehicles reach all of you . We would retrieve it if you continue to fight ”
Etuk urged education officers at the local government to ensure that Head teachers keep school environment clean for pupils before schools resume to instil culture of sanitation among pupils .
” We are having problems in the school system so we have to work together to address them . You have a duty to promote a clean learning environment for our children.”
He warned teachers to desist from using children for farm work especially in the ongoing farming season except during practical Agriculture lessons in the school farm .
Etuk noted that the local education secretaries conspired with teachers to falsify their age and forge retirement dates contrary to civil service rules adding that the affected officers should refrain from such acts .
” Some of these teachers are older to the extent that they can’t perform their duties in the classroom but you conspired with them to change their age so that they can continue in service instead of retirement.
” I have your names . I have also received petitions in this regard . Stop it .
” Cultivate good relationship with your host communities to increase school enrollment. Some of you are the reasons we have mushroom nursery schools in rural areas because you don’t attend classes and parents seek alternatives in private schools . We don’t want this to continue as school resumes”
