Gombe State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) has intensified efforts to restore degraded land and expand environmental interventions into rural communities, while assessing the survival and management of existing tree plantations.
The project team, led by the State Project Coordinator, Dr Sani Adamu Jauro, inspected roadside plantations stretching from behind the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), through the Police Headquarters, to the FCE (T) roundabout in Gombe metropolis.
The team, alongside representatives of Katalyst Dynamics & Contracting Company Ltd, also assessed a landfill site near the Waste-to-Wealth Recycling Plant along Bajoga Road to identify areas suitable for reclamation.
The proposed intervention involves planting appropriate tree species to help restore soil quality, control erosion, reduce wind impact and support environmental rehabilitation.
At BAP 4, behind Pen Resources Secondary School in New GRA, the team examined the growth and condition of previously planted trees, as well as post-planting management practices aimed at improving their survival.
The assessment is expected to help sustain existing environmental investments and improve vegetation cover across the state capital.
Jauro commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for supporting the implementation of the ACReSAL project.
In a separate exercise on Thursday, October 22, the team identified potential intervention sites at Tsauni Village, near Kalchingi, in collaboration with community representatives and other stakeholders.
Those involved included Hon. Bello Sulaiman Kumo, Chairman of Akko Amada Local Council Development Area, and representatives of Katilis Company.
Kumo commended the state government for extending development initiatives to the area and urged residents to protect the planned investment to ensure its sustainability.
Community members also expressed optimism that the proposed intervention would improve environmental conditions, protect livelihoods and create a healthier environment for future generations.
The activities reflect ACReSAL’s efforts to maintain existing environmental projects while identifying additional areas for restoration.
However, the project team did not disclose the size of the proposed reclamation sites, the number of trees assessed or the timeline for implementing the planned intervention at Tsauni Village.
