The Edo State government, under Governor Monday Okpebholo, has approved the renovation of the fire-ravaged Oba Market in Benin City, fulfilling a key campaign promise.

The announcement came from Paul Ohonbamu, Commissioner for Information and Communications, following a State Executive Council meeting chaired by the governor.

Ohonbamu noted that the market, destroyed by fire years ago, will be fully renovated, including the burnt sections. “Today, Exco has approved the renovation of the entire Oba Market, including the burnt areas,” he said, emphasising Okpebholo’s commitment to traders’ welfare.

The Council also approved a 25% advance payment for constructing 11 roads and a second flyover bridge at Adesuwa Junction along Sapele Road, complementing the ongoing Ramat Park flyover project. Ohonbamu stated that these funds will enable contractors to commence work, enhancing connectivity and easing traffic in Benin City.

Additionally, the government greenlit a road project in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, connecting to the village of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. Ohonbamu criticised Obaseki for neglecting the road, alleging he betrayed his people. Okpebholo’s approval reflects his inclusive development agenda, ensuring “universal” progress, the commissioner said.

Other approvals include:

– Construction of an EDSTMA office on Sapele Road
– Fertilizer warehouses in Irrua, Auchi, and Benin City to boost agriculture
– A 100-bed hospital in Uwessan to support a nursing school in Udomi, Esan Central
– Construction of Uhie Road off Sapele Road
– Purchase of furniture and electronics for renovated MDAs

Ohonbamu noted Okpebholo’s focus on food sufficiency, healthcare, and infrastructure, aligning with his campaign pledges. These initiatives, approved on May 14, 2025, underscore the administration’s push for rapid development within its first six months, as corroborated by recent reports on the governor’s infrastructure strides.
