Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) have congratulated the Roman Catholic Church on the election of Pope Leo XIV.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in a statement on Friday, noted that the significant milestone brought joy to Catholics worldwide, and CAN joined in celebrating the momentous occasion.

He said: “The emergence of Pope Leo XIV signifies renewal and hope for the Catholic Church. CAN is confident that the new Pontiff will advance peace, justice, and inclusiveness, continuing the legacy of his predecessors.”

He said CAN would continue to pray that Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate be blessed with wisdom, good health and strength to lead God’s people on the path of righteousness.

CBCN President, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, in a statement, on Friday, assured him of allegiance, prayers and support as he embarks on his petrine ministry.

He also extended congratulations to all the Cardinals who participated in the conclave, particularly Venerable Peter Ebere, Cardinal Okpaleke, and to the entire College of Cardinals for their role in the election.

“This papal transition showcases the church’s commitment to dignity, honour, and spiritual discernment, offering the world a powerful example of conducting affairs with grace and reverence as children of God,” the CBCN President added.

He invited all Nigerians and people of goodwill to join in praying for the new Pope, that he might be endowed with wisdom, courage, and grace to fulfil his sacred mission.
