Vice President Kashim Shettima has applauded the contribution of the Tijaniyya Islamic sect in fostering unity in Nigeria’s  Muslim community.

He gave the commendation at the 2025 Maulud celebration for the late Sheikh Ibrahim Niass, spiritual leader of the Tijaniyya sect at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano

A statement by Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Kano governor’s spokesperson, said VP Shettima, who was represented by Alhaji Babagana Fannami, praised the Muslim sect for remaining true to the teachings of Islam over the past century.

Shettima, special guest of honour at the occasion, eulogised the guiding principles of the ‘Sufi’ sect to humanity.

He emphasised the unwavering tenacity of the Tijaniyya sect to lessons of Prophet Muhammad rather than compromising matters of the jurisprudence of Islam. He, therefore, reminded Muslims to emulate the true teachings of Islam and avoid extremism.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf equally lauded the efforts of the Tijaniyya sect in maintaining peace and harmonious relationships with other sects in Nigeria.

“We appreciate all of you for coming to Kano from far and near to attend this year’s maulud for Sheik Ibrahom Niass.”

The police attempted to halt the Maulud over an alleged security threat, which the government had dismissed as a fake and unfounded claim.

Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, who doubles as the national leader of the Tijjaniyya in Nigeria, prayed for the unity of Muslims around the globe and tolerance with believers of other faiths.
