The Nigerian Community in Greater Manchester (NCGM), representing over 250,000 Nigerians, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to establish a Nigerian Consulate in the region.

The call was made by Alhaji Abiola Kumoye, Chairman of NCGM, who emphasised that a consulate would significantly ease the burden on Nigerian citizens in the Northwest, Northern England, Scotland, and surrounding areas, who currently travel to London for consular services.

Speaking in Manchester, Alhaji Kumoye outlined the logistical and financial challenges faced by Nigerians travelling long distances to access essential government services.

He pointed out that the cost of these trips is putting a strain on many, suggesting that the Nigeria House in Manchester could be repurposed as a consulate office to offer much-needed support.

“I’m not suggesting that the High Commission in London isn’t performing well, but the challenges faced by Nigerians on this side of the UK in travelling to London are better experienced than described. The costs are significant, and setting up a consulate in Manchester would alleviate this burden,” Kumoye said.

The NCGM Chairman further reiterated the organisation’s commitment to supporting the welfare of Nigerians in Greater Manchester and promoting unity among the community.

He expressed appreciation for the Nigerian High Commission’s efforts in the region, recognising their role in strengthening Nigerian culture and fostering unity.

Reflecting on the community’s history, Alhaji Kumoye noted that the NCGM was founded in 1945 by Nigerian students facing racism and discrimination in the UK. Today, the community remains dedicated to supporting one another and advancing the interests of Nigerians in the region.

In his New Year message, Kumoye extended greetings to President Tinubu, the First Lady, Vice President Shettima, and other government officials, as well as Nigerians both at home and abroad. He also urged Nigerians in the diaspora to remain peaceful and positive ambassadors for Nigeria.

With the establishment of a consulate in Manchester, Alhaji Kumoye believes 2025 will be a year of progress, unity, and lasting impact for the Nigerian community in the region.
