The Vice Chancellor of the Mountain Top University (MTU), Prof. Elijah Ayolabi, has called on the Federal Government to fund and support private institutions in areas of research and innovation.
He said costs of running universities are high, especially in generating power, which, according to him, costs the MTU N48 million monthly.
The vice chancellor, who spoke during the sixth convocation ceremony lauded the proprietor and General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Daniel Olukoya, for the enormous resources that have made MTU a model of private universities in Nigeria.
Ayolabi said the convocation ceremony is a significant occasion, marking the achievements of the graduating class and celebrating the academic excellence represented by the 50 first class graduates.
He also expressed pride in the institution’s commitment to fostering a conducive learning environment that enables students to excel.
He said 378 students bagged first degrees.According to him, 50 graduated with first class. A breakdown showed that College of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences has 19, while College of Basic and Applied Sciences has 31. He said 144 graduated at the second class honours, upper division, while second class honours, lower division has 127 and 24 bagged third class.
Ayolabi added that the institution graduated 17 postgraduates, 14 masters and two doctorate.
“Beyond academics, our students have distinguished themselves in various domains, including research, innovation, entrepreneurship and community service. This reflects our unwavering commitment to providing a holistic education that prepares our students to excel in a dynamic global environment.
“Our Food Science and Technology students came first in Refosts (10th regional Food and Technology Summit 2024 quiz competition) while Ajayi Iteoluwa, a student of IRPM won the 2024 under 25 years CEO Entrepreneur.”
Ayolabi said MTU was ranked 1st in Nigeria and globally recognised for sustainable development Goal 4 (quality education) in the Times Higher Education (THE) impact rankings.
“NUC approved additional five academic programmes in the university also expanding our hostel facilities both for campus A and B. Additionally, MTU has established mutually benefitting partnerships with international universities and industry leaders to enhance research, innovation and student exchange programmes. MTU remains steadfast in providing a comprehensive education that develops intellectual, spiritual and entrepreneurial competencies.”
The convocation lecture was delivered by Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas while honorary degree of letters was conferred on Alex Mbata, in recognition for his contributions toward development of MTU. Olajide Ayinla and Oluwatoyin Odunsanya got Distinguished Service Awards in recognition of their exemplary service and dedication.
