The warring communities in Osun State, Ilobu, Ifon, Erin, and Okanla, have agreed to surrender their weapons as part of an agreement to achieve lasting solutions in the communities.
The state government on Thursday hosted a security meeting with all stakeholders from the communities where it was agreed that any person or
group of persons in possession of firearms and ammunition should surrender such ammunition within 24 hours from 1st February 2024 to the nearest police or security formations.
A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, stated that it was further agreed that the police authority in the state should invite for interrogation, all those who made themselves available as chiefs or custodians of the disputed areas, while a 16-man resolution committee was established by the state government to sit and work out an amicable way(s) of settling the entire issues at stake.
The committee is to submit its findings within two weeks, with the 15th of February, 2024 given as the deadline while the security would continue to maintain the 6pm to 6 am curfew earlier imposed and all security personnel comprising the Army, Police, Civil Defence are to remain where they are to ensure lasting peace in the warring communities.
The stakeholder’s meeting also resolved that anybody found with arms and ammunition in the area after the deadline should be arrested and prosecuted.
