Maths4Life Foundation has pledged to promote education by strengthening a series of multifaceted initiatives that foster inclusive Mathematics learning that empowers students with opportunities for personal growth and a culture of excellence.
To achieve these goals, the foundation said it would focus on delivering a meaningful, lasting impact on Nigerian students by helping them to learn and apply mathematical concepts, theories, formulas and develop critical thinking and logical reasoning, as well as problem-solving skills.
The foundation said through its numerous competitions, it intends to leverage the transformative power of mathematics to improve education and empower individuals at all levels.
Briefing newsmen on the forthcoming 2025 National Mathematics Tournament (NMT) finals scheduled for Saturday, March 1, 2025, in Lagos, Omoniyi Osuntuyi, president, of Maths4Life Foundation, said its commitment to mathematics education is deeply rooted in its vision to identify and nurture students with exceptional mathematical abilities and foster a sense of healthy competition, teamwork and sportsmanship, among students.
Osuntuyi revealed that the 2025 NMT finals would attract contestants from eight different schools across seven states in the country to compete for the opportunity to emerge as the winner and the chance to partake in the N6 million prize money for the best three overall winners.
He further explained that winners, aside from the cash prizes, would be presented with trophies, medals, certificates and other consolation prizes for participants.
According to him, the schools that would compete in the final tournament are Epe Girls High School, Lagos; Penny International School, Lagos; University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School, Edo State; Bosdem College, Ogun State; Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja; Graceland International School, Rivers State; Little Scholars School, Kaduna State and Austica Memorial College, Anambra State.
He said NMT would provide opportunities for students from underprivileged backgrounds and socio-economic backgrounds to participate in national-level competitions, exposing them to quality education and resources and promoting equal opportunity for all.
He said: “The tournament offers resources, support and mentorship to participating students, helping to bridge the gap between their current skills and future aspirations.”
The Admin Officer for Maths4Life Foundation, Mopelola Ajetunmobi explained that NMT would provide students with opportunities to learn about various STEM careers and inspire them to explore these fields.
Ajetunmobi further stressed that students at various competitions have the opportunity to interact with STEM professionals, mentors and role models and gain insights into the practical applications of mathematics.
The long-term objective of the foundation, according to Ajetunmobi, is to create a world in which education, particularly mathematics, is thoroughly understood, valued and celebrated.
She emphasised that mathematics permeates every aspect of life, which is why the Maths4life foundation advocates for initiatives that demonstrate its application from childhood through to old age.
“Soon, we plan to produce reality television shows, films and events that promote the integration of mathematics into our everyday lives, regardless of one’s educational level or professional background.
“We will continue to establish platforms that recognise and support individuals and institutions committed to enhancing education, enabling them to serve as role models and inspire a broader audience to appreciate,” she said.
She disclosed that from 2022 till date, Maths4Life has organised the World Mathematics Tournament twice, online PDT every quarter with participants from all over the world.
“All these competitions help students to learn and apply mathematical concepts, theories and formulas, and also develop critical thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills and prepare students for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields,” she pointed out.
