A retired soldier, 72-year-old, identified as Francis Dooga, has allegedly committed suicide in Makurdi, the Benue state capital.

Our correspondent gathered that Dooga committed suicide in his compound opposite St. Joseph Catholic Church at Nyiniongun, a suburb of Makurdi.

It was said that the deceased hung himself to death on a tree at his residence.

A neighbour who who didn’t want to be named said the deceased popularly known in the area as “old soldier” hung himself while every member of his family were away from home.

The neighbour who said the body of the retiree was found dangling on a tree at about 6:00pm, last Sunday, January 28, 2024, wondered why he took the decision to end it all.

At the time of filing this report, immediate family members of the deceased declined comments on the incident but some residents of the area said the old soldier, before his action, had complained of hardship.

Another resident said the deceased had also complained that he was defrauded of his pension by scrupulous persons.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in Benue, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident.

Anene in a phone conversation said, “the incident was reported. Nobody knows why he committed that act but we are investigating it.”
