Seven site workers sustained varying degrees of injury in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in the early hours of yesterday, when a four-storey building under construction collapsed at Awosika, Old Bodija, in Ibadan North Local Government Area.
Sources said the injured people were taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for medical attention. But no death was recorded in the incident, which reportedly occurred by 5:45am.
A combined team of the Oyo State Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other security agencies reportedly carried out the rescue operation at the site.
When Daily Sun visited the scene around 11am. yesterday, the rescue operation had been completed, as nobody was seen on the site. The makeshift gate to the site, which was made with roofing sheets, was locked and there was an inscription on the gate that the property has been sealed. It was said that the site was sealed by the government after the rescue operation.
Further observation revealed that some weeks ago, the Oyo State Housing Corporation had written a stop order on the roofing sheets, used to fence the site. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Adewale Osifeso, said: “The incident did occur at the early hours of Thursday, 08/09/2022, along the Bodija axis, under Ibadan North Local Government Area.
“In furtherance of the above, the site has since been cordoned with adequate deployment of police personnel in the interest of public health and safety. More updates would be provided accordingly, please.”
