A total of 42 medical graduates of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State, yesterday, took a hypocritical oath.

The graduates are the first set of medical graduates the university has produced since its establishment by the federal government.

The event held at the Professor Paul Ezeonu Complex, in Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA), was attended by academic scholars in the medical field within and outside the state, and other professions, parents, and guardians of the medical graduates and government officials.

Speaking at the induction ceremony, Vice Chancellor of Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, said a total of 50 students got admission into the medical department of the university and that 42 successfully graduated after satisfying all the necessary requirements.

He urged them to go into the society and excel in the medical profession and prayed that their time in the university should be a springboard for greater heights.

He described the successful graduation of the students as a remarkable milestone in the history of the university.

“You will agree with me that it is not easy to start a medical school , within eight years, graduate the first batch of students.

“I  know some universities around us that it took over 14 years before they could graduate one, but Alex Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo has been able to do it within eight years”, Nwachukwu said.

He commended former Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, for his major role in establishing the college of medicine of the institution, and the past administration in the school for the solid foundation it laid, which led to the milestone the college has reached.

The vice chancellor said the university was committed to producing medical professionals who are not only knowledgeable but, also, compassionate, skills and dedicated to serving humanity.

He expressed the hope that the pioneer medical graduates will make waves like their counterparts in other Nigerian universities and implored them to live above board in their practice and uphold the highest standard of professionalism.

He opined that the pioneer medical graduates of the university are testament to the institution’s unwavering commitment to providing quality education that meets best standard.

Also speaking at the event, the Medical Director of AE-FUTHA, Professor Robinson Onoh, described medicine as a calling and enjoyed the new graduates to practice the profession with compassion and integrity.

“The oath you are taking is not just a mere recitation of words, but it is a covenant and moral ethical commitment to humanity. Medicine, as we practice it, is not just a profession, but it is a calling from God.

“Medicine is a calling, and if you are not called by God, you will not be able to do the necessary things you are supposed to do as a doctor, and I believe that, today, 42 of you are called by God to serve humanity and it demands your intellectual discipline, it demands your emotional resilience, it demands your compassion, it demands your integrity and, also, demands a live-long learning”, he said.
