Over 400 youths from Igbo Eze South and neighbouring local government areas have graduated from a 10-day ethical artificial intelligence (AI) skills training programme, held at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Enugu State.

The grand finale of the capacity-building initiative, organised by the Igbo-Eze South Local Government, in collaboration with the UNESCO Country Office, Abuja and UNN, attracted top government and academic stakeholders.

Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, was represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.

Participants, drawn largely from local government areas across Enugu North and other parts of the state and beyond, were trained on ethical artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, and emerging digital technologies aimed at improving employability and innovation.

A major highlight of the programme was the practical demonstration of skills by the trainees, who showcased innovative solutions and real-life applications of ethical AI, reflecting the depth and effectiveness of the training.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman, Igbo-Eze South Local Government, Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, said the initiative underscored his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and skills development.

“Yesterday, at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, I had the honour of welcoming the Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, as we rounded off the youths training initiative on ethical artificial intelligence skills, funded by our administration,” he said.

Ukwueze added that he was impressed by the confidence and quality of output displayed by the participants, noting that they demonstrated practical applications of ethical artificial intelligence and intelligent systems.

He expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, for providing an enabling academic and research environment, as well as the UNESCO team, led by Prof. Nneka Okafor; the acting Director, International Collaborations, Dr Kelechi E. Nnamani; the Dean, Faculty of Vocational and Technical Education, Prof. Chinyere T. Ogbuanya; and the technical expert trainers.

Reaffirming his administration’s resolve, Ukwueze said the programme aligned with Governor Mbah’s “Tomorrow Is Here” agenda, which prioritises innovation, technology-driven growth, and a future-ready workforce for Enugu State.

He pledged that the local government would sustain and expand investments in initiatives that equip young people with relevant, market-driven skills, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for the development of Enugu and Nigeria.
