A total of 32 teams will compete for N5 million and additional prizes at Lagos Street Soccer Season 2.
The unveiling of the teams and kits marked the first week of the two-week tournament themed: “Oshodi Hidden Talents,” aimed at discovering and promoting grassroots talent in the state.
Organised by Mr. Adebanji Atewogboye, the Senior Aide to the Governor on Grassroots Sports, in partnership with First Bank Nigeria Plc, the tournament was created to keep youths off the streets and educate them about drug abuse through NDLEA lectures held during the event.
This initiative supports Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s efforts to promote grassroots sports across 57 local governments in Lagos. Mr. Atewogboye, aka SKIBANJ, explained that the Lagos Street Soccer Stars Oshodi edition is part of a year-long effort to identify hidden talents, structure their development, and demonstrate that Gov. Sanwo-Olu is invested in their dreams.
NDLEA’s Chief Superintendent Samuel Ayenigbara, Lagos Strategic Command, warned young people against drug abuse, emphasising that abstinence from hard drugs enhances performance and talent. The Lagos State government is implementing programs through the SSA and Sporty Lagos Naija to combat the destruction of talent and dreams, urging youth to choose life over drugs.
The event attracted community leaders, coaches, residents—who braved light rain to witness the kickoff—and also included Hon. Saheed Animashaun, APC LGA Chairman, Oshodi-Isolo. He praised Mr. Atewogboye for strengthening youth and grassroots sports development, noting the event’s significance for Oshodi. He also credited the program as a valuable dividend of democracy under President Bola Tinubu and Governor Sanwo-Olu, with particular mention of road rehabilitation supporting the turf.
Recent fixtures saw Dosunmu Street win in a penalty shootout after a draw with Ariyibi Oke Street. Popoola Street beat Adeyemo Street 2-1, while Amusa Street scored 3 goals to Amusa Street’s 1. Olorunishola Street triumphed over Arowojobe Street 3-1.
Dignitaries such as APC leaders, including Hon. Mumuni Olori, Chief Femi Akeju, Chief Ipadeola Lawanson, and others, attended the event. Sponsored by Gov. Sanwo-Olu and First Bank Nigeria Plc—our official title sponsor—the tournament runs until August 15, 2026. Other sponsors include the King Ogunremi Foundation and Dangote Salt Plc.
