A total of 32 Nigerian athletes — comprising 16 males and 16 females — have commenced a six-week camping programme in Asaba, Delta State, as preparations gather momentum for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The athletes, selected across various track and field disciplines including sprints, relays, jumps and throws, arrived at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, on Saturday for the first phase of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s (AFN) build-up programme.
The Asaba camp is aimed at sharpening athletes’ fitness levels, refining technical execution and strengthening team cohesion ahead of international competition.

Training activities at the camp are being coordinated by a six-man technical crew led by AFN Head Coach, Solomon Aliyu, who will oversee daily training sessions and conduct performance evaluations throughout the camping period. He is supported by specialist coaches handling sprints, relays, hurdles, jumps and throws.
AFN Technical Director, Gabriel Okon, is heading the delegation and will supervise the technical framework, athlete monitoring and adherence to federation standards during the exercise.
Speaking on the programme, AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, said the six-week camp would help identify athletes in peak condition while providing a strong foundation for subsequent phases of preparation as Nigeria targets a strong outing at the Commonwealth Games.
Okowa expressed optimism that the Asaba camp would enhance the athletes’ competitive edge and place Team Nigeria in a strong position to challenge for podium finishes on the global stage.
