At least, 250 top amateur and professional golfers will storm Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, for the seventh edition of Sovereign Trust Insurance Golf Tournament that will hold at Ibadan Golf Club (IGC).
The captain of IGC, Olumide Oyediran, told journalists at a press conference in Ibadan on that the two-day tournament would begin on Saturday, March 23, 2019.
Oyediran, who was represented by Colonel Ade Sunmonu(retd), the first vice-captain of IGC, at the press conference, stated that the event would be preceded by health outreach on Friday for members of the IGC and other participants.
Some of the top amateur golfers drawn from across Nigeria is expected at the tournament sponsored by Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc include Ahmed Sulaiman from IGC; Olusegun Daniel of Ikoyi Golf Club; Muyiwa Adebusuyi from IGC; and Samson Arowolo from Abeokuta Golf Club.
Oyediran who lauded the insurance company for its contribution towards making golf a popular game in Nigeria noted that “golf is not a popular game in Nigeria. We appreciate efforts of companies like Sovereign Trust Insurance, whose contributions have made the game to be popular.
“Our government needs to do more for the game of golf in the country. It is a game that can earn people a living, boost tourism and generate revenues,” he said.
Secretary, Planning Committee for the tournament, Mr. Nduka Bernard, who revealed that gross and net winners of the tournament would be presented with fantastic prizes and souvenirs, explained that “the competition will feature 0-14 handicap (Gross Plus/ Net), 15-28 handicap (Guess) and veterans above 60 years. The professional level is restricted to the home-based golfers.”
Head, Corporate Communication and Brand Management, Sovereign Trust Insurance, Mr. Segun Bankole, said the company decided to sponsor the tournament in order to open new opportunities as a corporate social responsibility.
“It is one of our ways of giving back to the society and also opening new opportunities with golf clubs in Nigeria. It is a continuous relationship and we will uphold it.
“We want to see the Sovereign Trust Golf tourney in the international scene. This will also help in exposing our brand to the world. We appreciate the media for their support always,” he said.
