The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, has urged Nigerians to make informed choices in the 2027 general election, stressing that their votes could have a direct impact on their well-being and survival.
Kukah made the call on Friday while speaking on the sidelines of the 70th anniversary celebration of Saint Finbarr’s College.
The Catholic bishop urged Nigerians to properly scrutinise candidates before voting, advising voters to make use of information available on the internet to learn about the people seeking their votes.
“This is what I encourage young people, please vote to stay alive,” Kukah said.
He, however, stressed that voters could not completely shift responsibility for the outcome of elections to institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the government or security agencies.
According to him, Nigerians must recognise their own role in determining the quality of leadership produced through elections.
“But we are all largely responsible for the nature of the choices that we make, because as I said, we are not as innocent as we think we are,” he said.
Kukah maintained that while electoral institutions have responsibilities to ensure credible elections, citizens also have a duty to make careful and informed decisions at the polls.
He therefore encouraged Nigerians, particularly young people, to examine the records and backgrounds of candidates before supporting them in the 2027 election.
His comments come as political parties and aspirants intensify preparations for the 2027 general election, with voters expected to play a central role in determining the outcome of the polls.
