The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has constituted a National Election Mobilisation Committee ahead of the 2027 general elections.
President of the student body, Comrade Babatunde Akinteye disclosed this in a statement sent to Daily Sun on Sunday.
According to the statement, Akinteye will serve as Director-General while immediate-past NANS President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja was appointed National Coordinator.
The statement reads, “As the apex student representative body with over 40.1 million Nigerian students as members, we constitute a significant voting bloc in the country.
“It is noteworthy that we are major stakeholders in nation-building, as students constitute a significant segment of the country’s population and are directly affected by government policies and decisions. Hence, we cannot afford to toe the path of apathy or remain indifferent to the democratic process.”
According to Akinteye, the committee will coordinate the sensitisation, mobilisation and monitoring of student participation and election-related activities across the six geopolitical zones, with a target of facilitating the participation of at least 10 million Nigerian students in the 2027 polls.
He added that the committee is expected to commence immediate sensitisation, mobilisation and monitoring across campuses and work with all NANS structures, student unions and stakeholders.
He also directed that all political support groups and election-related organisations seeking to organise political or election-related activities involving Nigerian students must liaise with the committee for coordination and monitoring.
