Chief Joseph Chukwuma Ikunna has placed wealth creation, employment and security at the centre of his bid to represent Ohaji-Egbema, Oguta and Oru West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, proposing stronger links between the constituency’s oil, gas and agricultural resources and investments in power, manufacturing and local enterprise.
Ikunna, popularly known as JCI, is seeking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket for the 2027 election, with an agenda anchored on connecting constituents to opportunities within federal ministries, departments and agencies, development institutions and the private sector.
An entrepreneur and community development advocate, he is campaigning on the mantra, “Wealth is what we create,” arguing that representation should help build productive systems, create jobs and expand access to programmes that improve livelihoods.
His proposition centres on the legislator as a resource aggregator who identifies available opportunities and mobilises partnerships to address constituents’ needs in education, skills development, enterprise and infrastructure.
The constituency comprises 33 wards across three oil-producing local government areas in Imo State. Ikunna maintains that its natural resources can support a broader economic base through investment in electricity, agricultural processing, manufacturing and other productive activities.
His emphasis on energy and industrial development draws partly from his experience operating a palm-kernel crushing plant in Uzinaumu, Mgbidi, which, according to his profile, had a processing capacity of 100 tonnes daily.
The facility provided employment and supported local processing before closing in 2022, a development he attributed to unreliable electricity supply and rising diesel costs.
That experience informed his subsequent investment in renewable energy through Solaria Lumina Power Limited, which has undertaken household solar electrification and street-lighting projects in Uzinaumu and other communities.
Ikunna argues that improved electricity access would enable oil-producing communities to expand into food processing, cold-chain services and other businesses capable of sustaining employment beyond the extractive sector.
His entry into electoral politics dates back to 2014, when he sought the PDP nomination for the Oru West seat in the Imo State House of Assembly. After losing the nomination, he joined the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), secured its ticket and contested the 2015 election.
He challenged the result declaring Donatus Onuigwe the winner, but his petition was struck out on a procedural ground concerning failure to apply for the statutory pre-hearing notice within the prescribed seven-day period.
Ikunna returned to the PDP in 2018, supported Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s governorship ambition and provided campaign infrastructure in Oru West, while continuing his business and community development activities.
Born in Leicester, United Kingdom, in October 1966 to the late Nze Godwin Onyebuchi Ikunna and Lolo Roseline Iheoma Ikunna, he hails from Uzinaumu, Mgbidi, in Oru West Local Government Area.
According to his biographical profile, he attended Baptist Academy, Lagos, and graduated with honours in Industrial Mathematics and Statistics from the then Anambra State University of Technology in 1987.
He taught Mathematics in Minna during his National Youth Service Corps programme and ventured into business before joining the British Civil Service in 1989. He worked at the Inland Revenue’s Capital Taxes Office in Shepherd’s Bush and subsequently relocated with the office to Nottingham.
Following his return to Nigeria in 1997, he developed consumer goods distribution businesses through Nairastretch Nigeria Limited and Bulldog Nigeria Limited. His interests later expanded through Kensington Pharmaceutical Nigeria Limited and Jaccin Edibles Limited in the United Kingdom, where he developed the Golden Ribbon vegetable oil and tomato ketchup brand.
His community interventions include programmes undertaken through the Joseph Chukwuma Ikunna Foundation, established in 2009.
The foundation’s account of its activities indicates that it trained more than 1,500 young people in computer applications, desktop publishing and website design in 2013, with support including laptops and start-up tools. It also reports supporting about 1,000 beneficiaries through scholarships, educational grants and soft loans for women.
In 2014, Ikunna sponsored a unity football competition involving teams from the 12 local government areas of Orlu Zone, aimed at encouraging youth participation and strengthening community relations.
He also founded the Igbo Intelligentsia Forum for discussions on governance, restructuring, technology and relations among ethnic groups.
In early 2026, he established the Mgbidi Integrity Forum, described as a non-partisan initiative promoting community unity, cultural preservation, peace and economic opportunities.
One of its proposals is a confidential household register intended to identify needs in education, employment, skills acquisition, enterprise and healthcare, providing a basis for directing development interventions.
In September 2026, the Nigerian Association of Christian Journalists named him its Integrity Man of the Year. During the period, he clarified that he obtained a Certificate and Diploma in Management and completed the taught component of an MBA programme at Nottingham Trent University, but did not complete the dissertation required for the degree.
For his proposed legislative agenda, Ikunna identifies security, education, skills development, job creation and transparent representation as priorities, alongside efforts to attract investment and connect constituents to programmes that support enterprise and household incomes.2027: Ikunna anchors Reps bid on wealth creation, jobs, security
