A bus driver and female passenger were burnt beyond recognition on Tuesday after a commercial mini- bus somersaulted before bursting into flames along Ballet inward Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos State.

General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki confirmed the development.

It was learnt that the accident occurred around 5 pm.

Witnesses said the accident occurred when a private vehicle was reversing on the main carriageway.

According to the witnesses, the driver of the commercial mini-bus, which was travelling at considerable speed, suddenly applied brakes to avoid colliding with the reversing vehicle.

This caused the mini-bus, which was conveying nine passengers, to somersault several times before exploding in flames.

LASTMA officials who raced to the scene confirmed the mini-bus was carrying petrol in a five-litre container at the time, which contributed to the conflagration.

“Tragically, the driver and a female passenger seated at the front burnt beyond recognition in the ensuing inferno,” the LASTMA boss stated.

Other passengers were injured in the accident, which caused a traffic gridlock along the axis.
