Nineteen-year-old American Ginny Thrasher is the first champion of Rio 2016.

Growing up she always wanted to compete at the Olympic Games in figure skating.

“About the time I started shooting, toward the start of high school, I knew I wasn’t going to make it in ice skating. Other than that, I had never thought about the Olympics before” she said.

She entered the 2016 US Olympic Trials, with the goal of doing her best, not making the Olympic team.

Turns out her best was the world’s best.
