The Defence Headquarters has announced that 16 officers have been arrested and will face military justice over alleged acts of indiscipline and breach of service regulations.

Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, in a signed statement said the arrests followed a routine military exercise which uncovered various cases of misconduct within the ranks.

Investigations revealed that the grievances of the affected officers were linked largely to perceived career stagnation arising from repeated failures in promotion examinations, among other internal administrative concerns.

The statement noted that some of the officers had been under military jurisdiction for previous offences and were either awaiting or undergoing trial before the latest development. Their conduct, the Defence Headquarters said, was found to be incompatible with the standards of military discipline and professionalism.

Brigadier General Gusau explained that upon completion of ongoing investigations, the indicted officers would face the full military disciplinary process in line with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve the integrity of the Armed Forces.

“The Armed Forces wishes to assure the general public that these actions are strictly disciplinary in nature and form part of routine efforts to maintain order, discipline, and loyalty within the ranks,” the statement read.

The Defence Headquarters reiterated that the Armed Forces would not tolerate any act capable of undermining the integrity of the military institution or threatening its constitutional role under democratic governance.

It reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian military to professionalism, constitutional responsibility, and the maintenance of internal discipline necessary for effective national defence.
