Fourteen pupils of St. Saviour’s School, Ikoyi, Lagos, will represent the school at the 2024 Council of British International Schools (COBIS) games in Mombasa, Kenya, which starts next week.
Head Teacher of the school, Craig Heaton, disclosed this during a visit to the team by one of the sponsors, Mandilas, led by its Group Chief Executive Officer, Ola Debayo-Doherty.
Heaton, who was in company with a board member of the school, Olayemi Edeki, urged the 14 pupils to uphold the school’s value and integrity during the competition.
According to him, the team made up of seven boys, seven girls and three teachers would depart the country on Saturday, March 23, 2024.
The head teacher said the pupils would compete in swimming, athletics and football and expect them to bring back the trophy, which the school had won five times.
He said: “We hope they will come back from Mombasa with the trophy. Our children are ambassadors of the school and Nigeria. At games, our children will meet other pupils from other countries and interact with other children. We expect them to exhibit value and integrity, which the school is known for.
“The important thing is that we want our children to portray the value we are known for and market the school and our country.”
Edeki said the pupils have continued to deliver year in year out and stressed the games is not a walk over for the school as others would hope to win the competition.
She explained that the pupils have trained very hard and are committed to doing better at the games.
Edeki said the school expects the team to exhibit good manners in and outside the field of play.
Head, Corporate Affairs of Mandilas, Samuel Kalu, said the history of the company’s relationship with the school dates back to many years and has continued to wax strong.
Kalu said children of the owner of Mandilas attended St Saviour’s School, Ikoyi, adding, “we have always sponsored some of their events.”
He confirmed that the firm is sponsoring the 14 pupils to Kenya, stating, “we donated sports kits and we will cover some of the expenses too and when they return, we will be part of the welcome party.”
Kalu said Mandilas expects the school team to win the competition and make the country proud.
He also revealed the company would participate in the school’s Fun Day in November and sponsor any event as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility.
