Twelve suspects who were arrested for illegal possession of firearms before and during the local government election in Osun state, were yesterday, dragged to the court by the police.
According to the prosecutor, Akintunde Jacob, the defendants: Ibrahim Raji, 28; Akanbi Gbenga, 31; Olasupo Taiye, 29; Ibrahim Olayiwola, 25; Abduljeleel Ibrahim, 28; Emmanuel Tumileyin 27 and others still at large, on February 22, 2025, at Ororuwo in Boripe local government, unlawfully had firearms in their possession.
The police alleged that the defendants, while acting in concert and armed with locally made barrel prohibited firearm and other dangerous weapons and conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace or reasonable apprehension of the breach of peace and thereby committed offences contrary to the law.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the five counts of conspiracy, unlawful assembly, unlawful possession of firearms, and breach of peace.
In a separate charge, the prosecutor told the court that Hon. Jade Jooda,60, Yekini Wahab, 26, Wakili Yakubu,23, Ganiyu Habeeb,37, Owoade Nureni,62 and Abayomi Olanrewaju, 36, conspired with others, still at large, to commit an offence to with unlawful assembly on February 17, at Ikire in Irewole LG of the state. They all pleaded not guilty to the five count charges of unlawful assembly, illegal possession of five Dane gun, and conduct likely to cause breach of peace. Their counsel, Taofik Tewogbade, urged the court to grant them bail in a liberal term, saying the alleged offences against them are bailable.
Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara, granted the defendants bail in the sum N1million with one surety in like sum and adjourned to May 15, for hearing.
