10-year erosion threatens to swallow Imo community

Imo

From Stanley Uzoaru, Owerri

In the heart of Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, a quiet crisis brews as the Uhuala Obibi Ochasi community teeters on the brink of extinction. The once-peaceful agrarian community is under siege from a menacing gully erosion that has ravaged over two kilometres of land, leaving a trail of destruction and despair.

The erosion, which started about 10 years ago, has claimed several ancestral compounds, buildings and farmlands. The community’s pleas for help have largely fallen on deaf ears, with hundreds of residents rendered homeless and forced to relocate to distant communities.

Chairman of Uhuala Obibi Ochasi community, Chief Okechukwu Ogbuka, is leading the cry for help, appealing to the Imo State government and the federal government to intervene before it is too late.

“The erosion has become a monster that’s devouring our community,” he lamented. “We need urgent action to save our homes, our farms and our heritage.”

Mr. Magnus Udegbe, a prominent son of the community, echoed the chairman’s concerns: “We’ve sent distress signals to the authorities, but nothing seems to be working. The erosion is widening and deepening by the day. We fear for our lives and our future.”

As the rainy season approaches, the community holds its breath, praying for a miracle. The gully erosion, measuring over 75 metres deep and 100 metres wide, is a stark reminder of the impending disaster. Will the authorities hear their cries and act in time to save Uhuala Obibi Ochasi community from becoming a mere memory?
