The Zamfara State Government has targeted 1.3 million eligible children across the state for polio immunisation.

This was announced by the Zamfara State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Taskforce Committee on Primary Health Care System, Mani Mallam Mumuni.

He disclosed this during a monthly meeting of the task force held at his office in Gusau.

He said the state government had declared a state of emergency on polio in Gummi Local Government Area by deploying experts and ramping up immunisation.

A statement by the spokesperson of the Zamfara State Ministry of Health, Sulaiman Isa, quoted the deputy governor as emphasising the importance of immunisation in protecting public health, especially among children.

He said vaccination remains one of the most cost-effective public health interventions and plays a critical role in preventing diseases that pose serious threats to communities.

The deputy governor also highlighted key public health challenges facing the state, including maternal and child mortality, malnutrition and other vaccine-preventable diseases.

He commended development partners for their continued support, while the Executive Secretary of the Zamfara State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Husaini Yakubu Anka, and the State Coordinator of the World Health Organisation, Dr Raji Mukhtar, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the state government’s efforts to end the polio outbreak and strengthen routine immunisation.
