Rt. Hon. Bilyaminu Moriki, Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, has declared a parallel Assembly formed by suspended lawmakers illegal and unconstitutional.

Addressing journalists in his office on Thursday, Moriki reaffirmed that the Assembly under his leadership is the only legitimate legislative body authorised to perform duties in Zamfara.

Moriki condemned the actions of the suspended members, led by factional Speaker Bashar Aliyu Gummi, who held a parallel sitting on Wednesday. “Any legislative sitting must take place within the official premises of the Assembly House in Gusau,” he said, noting a social media report about the faction’s decisions. He described their actions as null and void, citing a pending court case against the suspended lawmakers.

“There was a report circulating on social media that a parallel Assembly sat and took major decisions on state affairs,” Moriki said. “Zamfara State has only one legitimate House of Assembly.”

He declined further comment, awaiting the court’s judgement, stating, “The law will take its course.”
