Over 3,000 civil servants confirmed to have been retrenched from service by the Zamfara State government during a screening exercise conducted about two years ago have resorted to going spiritual, organising special ritual prayers seeking divine intervention.
The sacked workers, comprising teachers and health workers among others from across the 14 local government areas, lamented that they were denied salaries since February 2025 in the state.
According to one of the victims, Mohammed Shamsu, who spoke on Monday, October 13, shortly after the special prayer session aimed for God’s intervention, said they would continue with recitation of the Quran seeking for Allah’s intervention in the state.
“We are human beings like any other person; we have families who solely depend on us, but the state government denied us salaries since February this year. This is inhuman,” he lamented.
Also speaking, another victim who broke into tears lamented that they had exhausted all avenues from the commissioner to the head of state civil service for their intervention and restoration of their means of livelihoods, but had not succeeded.

The victims further disclosed that they had once met with Governor Dauda Lawal for his intervention, where he promised to settle the matter, but up till now he had put a deaf ear to us.
“We also have taken our complaint to the commissioner for education and head of service to look into our matter; we don’t know our sin. We have the qualifications and we are professionals in our fields of work rendering services for the state government. We need help, please.”
The sacked workers who were cut across the 14 local government areas have maintained that prayer and recitation of the Holy Quran would continue, urging Governor Dauda Lawal to have human feelings and look into their plights.
It could be recalled that in February this year the state government through its verification committee said a total of 2,363 ghost workers were uncovered.
