Yuletide: Delta enforces ban on knockouts, ‘banger’, to arrest, prosecute offenders

From Joe Obukata Ogbodu, Warri

The Delta State Police Command has reiterated the ban on the use of fireworks and knockouts as the Christmas season approaches, warning that it will strictly enforce the prohibition on the use, sale, and display of pyrotechnics, including firecrackers known as ‘knock-outs’ and ‘bangers’.

State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, stated on Thursday that Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has already directed DCP Operations, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to monitor strict compliance and address violations within their jurisdictions.

The enforcement is part of efforts to ensure a safe and peaceful Yuletide season. Edafe explained that the decision stems from ongoing attempts to prevent and reduce crime, as history shows that criminal elements often use fireworks to create confusion and commit offences during festive periods.

“On this note, parents and guardians are advised to caution their children and wards to desist from using these items, and retailers are equally warned to withdraw from selling these products. Anyone found wanting will be arrested, prosecuted, and their goods impounded,” Edafe added.

The CP appreciated the cooperation of Deltans in upholding the ban, and citizens were encouraged to report incidents involving the use or sale of fireworks to the nearest police station or call the command control room numbers.
