The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) has condemned the spate of killings and kidnappings in the country.
YOWICAN President, Belusochukwu Enwere, in a communiqué issued after the second quarter meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) yesterday in Abuja, demanded the unconditional release of Pastor Paul Musa, his wife (abducted in March 2023), the director of Ecumenism, and his daughter, who were abducted in Gusau, Zamfara State, as well as others abducted elsewhere who are still in the hands of their captors.
“The NEC totally condemns the persistence of insecurity in our country, which has manifested in the continuous killings across the country, especially the recent multiple bomb blasts in Borno State, where about 18 people lost their lives.
“We also call for the immediate release of Pastor Paul Musa, his wife, who were abducted in March 2023, the director of Ecumenism and his daughter, who were abducted in Gusau, Zamfara State, as well as others abducted elsewhere and are still in the hands of their abductors,” he said.
On the planned protest, he said, “The NEC wishes to state in clear terms that it dissociates itself from any form of forthcoming protest organised to demonstrate [against] hardship or bad governance by unknown individuals across the country.
“We are hopeful that with the steps taken so far by the Government and with the constant support and cooperation of all Nigerians, we shall get through this difficult moment.
“The NEC has resolved to [focus on] prayers and constant engagement with the Government until things get better for the nation.
“The NEC calls on all Christian youths to rise to the current economic challenges in the country by engaging themselves in vocational training and skills acquisition so as to be self-reliant.
“The NEC calls on the Government to continue to engage the youth and create more opportunities for them to be involved in nation-building.”
Enwere, however, “acknowledged and appreciates the effort of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for all the effort towards reviving the economy of the nation, which we have seen in his many reforms such as the speedy passage of the ₦70,000 minimum wage Act by the National Assembly, granting of local government autonomy, [and] implementation of the Student Loan Fund.”
