The youngest brother of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, has marked his brother’s 59th birthday with a message, describing him as an “unbreakable lion” who remains undefeated despite years in detention.
In a statement issued to mark the occasion, he said Kanu’s continued legal battles, including his pending case at the Court of Appeal, were proof that the IPOB leader had not been broken by his prolonged incarceration. “They jailed you with a dead law, yet you are still undefeated, still forcing the government to face Appeal,” Prince Emmanuel said. “They thought they buried you, they didn’t know you were a seed.”
Prince Emmanuel, who serves as IPOB’s spokesperson, described his brother as “The Great Masquerade,” a title he said reflects Kanu’s resilience through years of legal proceedings.

Kanu, born on September 25, 1967, leads the proscribed separatist group agitating for the secession of the South-East Region of Nigeria under the name, “Biafra.” He has been in detention since his controversial rendition to Nigeria in June 2021. He faces terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court, a case that has drawn sustained attention from his supporters, human rights groups, and sections of the international community.
His trial has featured multiple rulings and appeals, including proceedings before the Court of Appeal, which his supporters cite as evidence of unresolved questions in the case, while the Federal Government maintains that the charges against him are lawful and unresolved.
IPOB has continued to mark Kanu’s birthday annually as a rallying point for the movement, with members and supporters within Nigeria and in the diaspora using the occasion to reaffirm calls for his release.
