  • Over 1,000 students attend fourth edition as competition promotes literacy, confidence and academic excellence

The tension was palpable as young spellers took turns at the microphone, carefully sounding out challenging words before an audience of more than 1,000 students, teachers and parents.

The moment of triumph came when Enoabasi Udofot Idongesit of Beulah International School clinched the 1.8 million naira star prize and emerged winner of the 4th Edition of the Crunchies Spelling Bee Competition, held on June 20, 2026, at the Ibom Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development Centre, Uyo.

More than 100 schools registered for the competition, with 15 public and private schools qualifying for the grand finale. After progressing through three stages — the qualifying round, semi-final and final — four students emerged as the top performers.

Favour Asuquo Ukoh of Christian Sec. Community School was first runner-up; Inemesit Ibanga Ekpo of Monef Schools emerged second runner-up, while Etuk Blessing Ubong of Ray-Field International School placed third.

The competition, organised by Crunchies Fried Chicken, carried a prize pool of approximately ₦4.1 million and was attended by representatives of the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Education, NDLEA, NAPTIP and the National Orientation Agency.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director/CEO of Crunchies Group, Muka Ohaeji, the Head of Sales & Marketing, Vivien Chinazo-Okeomah, described the initiative as an investment in the future of young Nigerians.

“At Crunchies, we believe that investing in the next generation is one of the most meaningful contributions we can make to society. Through the Spelling Bee, we are giving young people an opportunity to learn, compete, build confidence and
discover their potential. We want them to know that their voices, knowledge and dreams matter.”

For the champion, the victory was the reward for preparation and determination.
“I am very happy to have won. The competition taught me that preparation and confidence are important. I am grateful to my teachers, my parents and Crunchies for giving me this opportunity,” Enoabasi said. The Crunchies Spelling Bee, themed

“Dare to Spell, Dare to Win,” is an educational initiative focused on promoting literacy, vocabulary development, confidence and healthy academic
competition among students.

Following its expansion to cities including Uyo, Aba, Akure and Asaba, Crunchies plans to further grow the initiative, including a statewide Spelling Bee competition in Abia State in 2027, alongside other city-level editions.

For Crunchies, the ambition is clear: to make the competition more than a contest of words, but a platform for building confident young people and investing in Nigeria’s next generation.
