Nigerian superstar Victor Osimhen has set his sights on winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and he also discussed the Super Eagles’ records.
The world-class striker grabbed a goal and an assist to inspire the Super Eagles to a 2-0 win over Algeria in a quarter-final showdown at the Marrakesh Stadium in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Saturday evening.
Osimhen, who is now two goals away from equaling the late Rashidi Yekini’s Nigeria goalscoring record (37 goals), was named Man of the Match.
“No, not at all,” the Galatasaray SK marksman said when asked if he was chasing Super Eagles records.
“I’ve said it countless times, whether I equal or surpass the record doesn’t matter. The late Yekini will always be the best striker the Super Eagles have ever had.”
The last time the Super Eagles lifted the AFCON title was in 2013 and Osimhen is determined to win his first major trophy with the West African giants, with a semi-final clash against the hosts, Morocco, looming.
“I’ve also been inspired by players like Odion Ighalo to give my best for the team. That doesn’t take anything away from Yekini’s legacy,” the 27-year-old continued.
“I’m just doing my best, and it’s amazing to be part of the Super Eagles’ history. My goal is also to win something important for my country, and with the support of my teammates, I’m on the right path.”
The match between Nigeria and Morocco will be played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Wednesday. Kick-off is at 22h00 CAT.
