Senator representing Zamfara West, Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, has been commended for committing N216 million to a scholarship programme for 2,055 indigent, orphaned and vulnerable students from the state.
A youth organisation, Greater Tomorrow, gave the commendation in a statement by its Director of Public Engagement, Victor Dogun, describing the initiative as an investment in the future of vulnerable young people in the state.
The privately funded programme covers tuition and registration fees for beneficiaries studying in tertiary institutions across the country.
Each beneficiary also receives a monthly stipend of N15,000 to cover transportation and other incidental expenses.
The programme covers students from all 14 local government areas of Zamfara State.
The group said the scholarship would ensure that indigent and vulnerable students were not denied tertiary education because of financial hardship. “We are pleased to lend our voices in commending Senator Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari for his scholarship programme for orphaned and vulnerable indigenes of Zamfara State.”
It said the programme was particularly significant because of the financial burden associated with tertiary education, adding that the monthly stipend would provide additional support to beneficiaries.
The organisation urged other politicians and wealthy individuals to emulate Yari by investing in education and supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“We commend these bold initiatives and call on other politicians, and wealthy individuals to emulate the good works of Senator Yari.”
The group said education remained critical to preparing young people for the challenges of life and building a productive society. “To be educated is to be equipped for the challenges of life. This is what Senator Yari is doing. He is equipping thousands of Zamfara indigenes for tomorrow.”
The group also called on governments at all levels to make education a priority, saying public office holders should focus on policies and programmes that improve the welfare and prospects of citizens.
“Governance is supposed to be for public good. Those who are entrusted with the people’s mandate should aim at meeting this cardinal objective. Without it, governance loses its value,” it said.
