It is unfortunate, particularly coming a day or two after the Attorney-General of the Federation had written to the INEC asking for postponement of the election. The public will see their action as responding to Attorney-General’s request. The constitution says they will not be subject to direction from any quarters. The problem with this kind of thing is that it destroys the confidence the public has in INEC. We trusted INEC as an independent body. Therefore, anything that suggests it is subject to manipulation will undermine people’s confidence. They assured everybody that they were ready for the election and that all sensitive materials had been delivered at their destination in readiness for the election.
But at the last minute, we woke up with announcement from INEC that election has been postponed. It will be an added cost to most of the polling agents who had already reported at their centres before this postponement. Some of them will have to stay back for one week. Who is going to feed them? How are they going to get money to book for hostel accommodation? It is very unfortunate.
