A supposed money-making charm has turned fatal in Nasarawa State, leaving a suspected Internet fraudster dead, his accomplice battling for life, and the herbalist who prepared it now on the run.

The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed that the incident happened in the Mararaba area after the deceased, identified simply as Sunday, and his friend, Tosin, allegedly approached the herbalist, known only as Alfa, to prepare a concoction to boost their cybercrime operations.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, told The Sun on Friday that the two men drank the potion and soon complained of severe stomach pain. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Sunday died while receiving treatment, while Tosin is recuperating.

“The two young men went to a herbalist to prepare a charm for them. They wanted to make money from their Advance Fee Fraud. So, the herbalist prepared a concoction for them.

Immediately after drinking it, they started experiencing stomach upset. They were taken to the hospital, where one of them died while receiving treatment, and the other is still responding to treatment,” Nansel said.

He added that a vigilante member who accompanied the suspects to the herbalist’s house had been arrested. The herbalist is currently at large, while the arrested suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

The tragedy comes weeks after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested no fewer than 17 suspected Internet fraudsters in Mararaba during an intelligence-led operation, recovering mobile phones, laptops, and vehicles.
