The Delta State Government has unveiled a comprehensive welfare package for Deltans repatriated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks, announcing monthly stipends of up to ₦300,000 to support their reintegration into society.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori made the announcement while receiving the returnees, expressing sympathy over the losses they suffered and reaffirming his administration’s commitment to helping them rebuild their lives.
Represented by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Prince Johnson Erijo, the governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for facilitating the safe return of the affected citizens to Nigeria.
As part of the intervention, Oborevwori announced that every affected family would receive a ₦2 million grant, while all returnees would enjoy free medical screening at state-owned health facilities. He added that the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development would provide trauma counselling and psychosocial support to aid their recovery.
The governor further disclosed that, beginning in August 2026, individual returnees would receive ₦200,000 monthly, while affected families would receive ₦300,000 monthly until the end of his first term in office.

“We are committed to ensuring that every affected Deltan is given the support needed to recover, rebuild and reintegrate into society with dignity,” the governor said.
Oborevwori urged residents across the state to welcome the returnees with compassion and understanding, noting that they had endured traumatic experiences outside the country.
“I urge all Deltans to receive our brothers and sisters with love and support. Let us stand together as one family and help them overcome this difficult period,” he said.
He encouraged the victims to remain resilient despite their losses, assuring them that his administration would continue to prioritise the welfare and wellbeing of every Deltan.
“Our administration remains committed to protecting the dignity, welfare and wellbeing of every Deltan. You are not alone, and together we will overcome this challenge,” the governor added.
