A non-governmental organisation, Living Hope SaveCell Foundation, has called on government at all levels, institutions, employers, schools, healthcare facilities, and communities to create environments where people living with sickle cell disorder can thrive.

The Founder of the NGO, Oluwabusayomi Soretire, made this call on Friday, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, while speaking with journalists shortly after a walk tagged “Abeokuta Red Umbrella Walk” organised by the NGO as part of activities to commemorate the 2026 World Sickle Cell Day.

Soretire said the event, with the theme “Closing the Survival Gap: Equity in Sickle Cell Care”, was to further create awareness on the blood disorder disease, which according to her is preventable with right education and enlightenment.

She declared that her Foundation stood for inclusion for every sickle cell warrior who has ever been misunderstood, discriminated against, or left behind.

She emphasised that sickle disorder should never define a person’s potential, stressing warriors deserve access to education, employment opportunities, quality healthcare and respect.

“Today, we call on government at all levels, Ogun State institutions, employers, schools, healthcare facilities, and communities to create environments where people living with sickle cell disorder can thrive. Let us replace stigma with understanding. Let us replace ignorance with education. Let us replace barriers with opportunities.

“Sickle cell disorder should not define a person’s potential. Warriors deserve access to education, employment opportunities, quality healthcare and respect.

“As we walk through Abeokuta, may our message be clear: every warrior matters; every warrior belongs; every warrior deserves dignity and no warrior should walk alone,” Soretire stated.

She, however, urged the people to ascertain their genotypes before they go into marriage to prevent giving birth to children with sickle cell disorder.

She further advised parents of children with blood disorder to always abide by the medication and care particularly in the wet season.
