The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for more support for children in conflict-prons areas.

Cristian Munduate, UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative made the call on Friday in Maiduguri, Borno State at a press conference to mark the 2023 World Humanitarian Day.

“We need to support communities to be more resilient. We need to make the school safer and protect school children from this assault, so that families and parents can send their children to schools,” the UNICEF rep said.

She said part of the reasons for increasing school drops out in the country was because of kidnapping of children.

Munduate described the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria as bad, urging government to prosecute bandits

“There have to be proper application of the law. It is not acceptable that bandits are not taking to court when they have been assaulting, raping, maiming and killing people,” she declared. She urged the media to push for this.

She said about 400,000 children are suffering from malnutrition in the country’s northeast. She assured that UNICEF has moved into the area to provide support for both severe and moderate cases.

The World Humanitarian Day is marked annually to remind and sensitize the people of the effect of conflict and disasters on humanity
