Germany booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage after substitute Deniz Undav scored twice in a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Ivory Coast in Toronto.
The four-time world champions fell behind in the 30th minute when Ivory Coast captain Franck Kessie converted from close range after Germany failed to clear their lines.
Germany dominated possession and created several chances but were frustrated by two disallowed goals before head coach Julian Nagelsmann turned to his bench in search of a breakthrough.
The changes proved decisive. Undav levelled in the 68th minute, finishing calmly from Nadiem Amiri’s delivery to bring Germany back into the contest.

With the match heading for a draw, the Stuttgart forward struck again deep into stoppage time, controlling Felix Nmecha’s pass before firing past goalkeeper Yahia Fofana to complete the turnaround.
The victory secured Germany’s second consecutive win of the tournament and guaranteed their passage to the Round of 32.
Despite the defeat, Ivory Coast remain in contention for qualification and can still advance from Group E with a positive result against Curacao in their final group-stage match.
Germany will conclude their group campaign against Ecuador, looking to maintain their perfect start and strengthen their credentials as one of the tournament favourites.
