Spain forward Ferran Torres has dedicated his decisive goal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final to the entire Spanish nation after firing La Roja to a historic 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina.
Torres came off the bench to score the only goal of the final in the 106th minute at the New York New Jersey Stadium, sealing Spain’s second World Cup title and ending Argentina’s hopes of retaining the trophy.
Reflecting on the defining moment of his international career, the Barcelona forward insisted the victory belonged to every Spaniard rather than the players alone.
“Ultimately, the goal belongs to 47 million people not just me or the 26 players,” Torres said, referring to Spain’s population.
The 26-year-old said the team’s triumph carried even greater significance because it was achieved far from home, while still bringing millions of Spaniards together in celebration.
“It was written in the stars that we would win far away from our people, yet we made them feel as close as possible.”
Torres, who was named Player of the Match for his match-winning display, also reflected on the personal challenges he endured during the tournament, revealing that he had faced intense criticism before delivering the decisive goal in the final.
“It’s a huge sense of relief. I faced a lot of criticism during the World Cup, but destiny is written. Thank God, who always gives me the strength to keep going.”
Spain’s victory came after a tense contest in which Argentina were reduced to 10 men following Enzo Fernández’s dismissal early in extra time. Torres eventually broke the deadlock to hand Luis de la Fuente’s side their first World Cup title since 2010.
The forward acknowledged the difficulty of overcoming Lionel Messi’s Argentina, describing the final as one of the toughest matches of Spain’s campaign.
“At the end of the day, all finals are tough. When you’re up against (Lionel) Messi, there’s a certain nervousness, but we always believed in our football and in ourselves.”
Spain’s triumph capped a remarkable tournament in which they conceded only one goal, becoming the first World Cup-winning side to achieve such a defensive record. Torres’ extra-time strike ensured La Roja claimed their second world title and completed another landmark chapter in Spanish football history.
