Senegal midfielder, Pape Gueye has announced he will “take a break” from the national team for as long as the current technical staff remains in charge.
The 27-year-old Villarreal star made this known in an Instagram post after the Teranga Lions’ Round of 32 exit to Belgium in the ongoing World Cup, following some questionable substitutions from head coach, Pape Thiaw.
Senegal lost 3-2 to Belgium after extra time in Seattle on Wednesday night.
“I will come back later to talk about the elimination. But, right now, I am announcing that, as long as this technical staff remains in charge, I will be taking a break from the National Team,” Gueye wrote.

The 45-cap midfielder, who made his debut in 2021, started the match against Belgium before being substituted just after the hour mark.
Senegal had led 2-0 through goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr before Belgium rallied with late strikes from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans to force extra time.
Tielemans grabbed another late in added time to send Belgium through to the round of 16 and break Senegalese hearts.
Head coach, Pape Thiaw is now under “extreme pressure” and may be ousted, according to reports.
