Former England striker Michael Owen has criticised England’s approach in their 2-1 World Cup defeat to Argentina, saying the team deserved to lose after retreating into a defensive shell.
Owen made the remarks on his X page after the match, contrasting England’s performance with Spain’s display in their 1-0 victory the previous night, which he described as an example of courage and bravery.
“Watch Spain at 1-0 last night. That’s courage. That’s bravery. And then watch England at 1-0. What’s the difference?”
Speaking after the match, the former Liverpool and Manchester United forward insisted England were the stronger side on paper but failed to show composure when protecting their lead.
“We are a better team than Argentina, I’ve no doubt in my mind. But we deserved to get beat in the end. In fact, it could have been 4-1.”
Owen also questioned the tactical changes made after England went ahead, particularly the introduction of three defenders.
“Bringing on three defenders at 1-0 up. What message does that send?”
According to Owen, England’s downfall was their inability to keep possession under pressure, opting instead for long clearances and aerial balls.
“Until we understand that courage and bravery is controlling possession under pressure and not booting or heading it up the field 40 yards, then this will always be the end result.”
Argentina overturned England’s lead to secure a 2-1 victory and advance to the World Cup final, where they will face Spain.
The defeat ended England’s hopes of winning their first World Cup title since 1966 and has intensified scrutiny of the team’s tactical approach in major tournaments.
