World football governing body FIFA has responded to UEFA and several continental confederations threatening to boycott its competitions amid its controversial proposal to bring private investment into the World Cup.
Speaking in a statement issued on Friday, the body disclosed that it would go ahead with consultation on the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) amid sustained opposition and backlash.
FIFA also added that there is no plan to “sell football” as it would not entertain that idea.
“We have heard the feedback provided by the respective confederation.
“We respect the feedback and concern aired in public and reaffirm our commitment to an open and democratic consultation.
“We will proceed with this consultation process to ensure that each member association has the ability to express its vote based on facts,” the statement reads.
“Nobody is selling football. This is not something FIFA would ever entertain.
“FFE has been proposed solely to ensure that all FIFA Member Associations have the opportunity to take meaningful ownership of the commercial opportunity of football in their respective countries, and that this does not come at the cost of either the spirit or the governance of FIFA or football itself.
“Each Member Association should be allowed to review the proposal and have a say in shaping their own future,” FIFA added.
