World Cup 2026: Yamal names player he rates above FIFA’s pick

Lamine Yamal

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has named Lionel Messi as his choice for the best player of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

FIFA awarded Spain midfielder Rodri the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final.

However, Yamal said in an interview with Movistar that he considered Messi the standout player of the tournament.

Messi scored eight goals and provided four assists during the competition.

He praised Messi’s performances during the competition, particularly his ability to influence important matches despite his age.

“For me, Leo Messi was the best player at the World Cup. Nobody expected a player at Leo’s age, even Leo himself, to be capable of doing those things at such a high level,” Yamal said.

“Even though everyone knows Messi is the greatest of all time, nobody expected him to have such a legendary World Cup.”
