Belgium and Egypt shared the points after a 1-1 draw in their opening Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday.

Egypt took the lead in the 19th minute through Emam Ashour, who finished brilliantly after being set up by captain Mohamed Salah, giving the Pharaohs a deserved advantage. Belgium struggled to break down Egypt’s disciplined defence for much of the first half.

The Belgians responded after the break and found an equaliser in the 66th minute when pressure from substitute Romelu Lukaku forced Egypt defender Mohamed Hany into an own goal.

The goal restored parity and sparked a stronger Belgian performance in the closing stages.

Both teams created chances to claim all three points, but neither side could find a winner as the match ended 1-1.

The result leaves Group G finely balanced, with Belgium set to face Iran in their next fixture, while Egypt will take on New Zealand as both sides continue their quest for a place in the knockout rounds.
