Workers turned back as organized Labour enforces strike in Taraba

By Viashima Sylvanus, Jalingo

The Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Taraba Chapter, Comrade Peter Jediel, said on Monday that the union has recorded 70% compliance from workers in the state regarding the indefinite strike action. He stated that workers who attempted to go to work earlier were turned back.

Jediel made this known while briefing newsmen in Jalingo. He said that the cooperation from trade unions in mobilizing fellow unionists for the strike was impressive.

Our Correspondent reports that unionists were seen driving workers who had earlier reported for duty out of their offices. The state secretariat, which houses the majority of state workers, became deserted.

Some commercial banks and private schools were seen operating, and activities at the state-owned Taraba State University continued as normal. The chapter Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Joshua Mbave, told our Correspondent that they are still awaiting directives from the national body.
